dr. b's response--crosspost

2008-08-31 19:42:33

this is what dr. b had to say regarding my situation. i will
say that i've mentioned the diarrhea to him twice before,
and he recommends the flagyl each time. but my dh,
who is also a physician, says flagyl is only going to work
if you have gut bugs that need killing. this is not the
case with me--i've been tested for ovum and parasites
and there's nothing there.
i wrote him to clarify the points he makes, and will send
him my exact labs, which i have here.
looks like i might very well be headed for a revision...

Question for the ladies...

2008-08-31 15:30:26

I'm "only" 50 pounds down, with 125 to go, but I'm already noticing
some sagging. My boobs were huge so a little more sagging isn't a big
deal, and I am certain I will need a tummy tuck, but... I am noticing
that the pad of fat over the pubic bone is starting to sag, and it's
kind of... well... gross looking. {blushing midly} Is this just some
oddity of MY body, or have others had this too? (Now I am starting to
realize that my tummy ITSELF may hang down that far when it is all
said and done...) Is this something they can take care of when they do
the tummy tuck?

Hi Lizanne,
I wear socks to bed now, but I have also been known to put a heating pad in
the bed about 10 minutes before I go in...I stick it at the bottom of the bed
for my toes. that seems to be good....remember to turn it either way down or
off before you crash. (I turn mine off because I am cheap, but I think as the
weither gets colder my wallet will open up a little more! :)

ps - if you wanted to be realy earth friendly I guess you put big clean rocks
in your oven and heat them up and then stick them in your bed....but I think I
will stick with the heating pad.

Good Morning,
I just wanted to remind everyone to change their clocks back an hour.
I forgot. That's good though, because I wanted to get to work early
today (I know it's Sunday, but remember I took a lot of time off for
my surgery and no one did my job while I was gone.) I just didn't
feel like going this morning. So, I actually thought I would get here
at 9 AM and I am here at 8 AM.
Also, I know that as we lose the weight we are all getting colder,
tempetature-wise, does anyone have a trick for getting your feet warm
in bed? I have no husband to stick them on, and my cats don't seem to
help.
Thanks and have a lovely Sunday.

Welcome Jamie. I spoke to Janie this week. I'm Patrice from Austin

surgery scheduled for Dec 14th with Dr. Marchesini. This is a
wonderful group. Ask your questions and everyone writes to help you.
Have you joined the list at duodenal switch too? That also helps.
See you in a few weeks!

New Pictures

2008-08-30 10:27:54

I just posted a couple of new pictures (waiting for approval right
now). I realized yesterday I didn't do my 4 month picture, so I had
my mom take a couple while at her house. I wasn't really prepared and
looked/felt really tired (and it shows!) but anyway, I've got it
done. The one thing I can note is that those jeans are REAL jeans!
Not the pull up kind with an elastic waist! *LOL* AND they're
comfortable! I love wearing jeans now.
Also I found a picture of when I was at my heaviest (305+). This was
difficult to find because I really did not want anyone taking my
picture. But this was taken at my 20th year service awards, so I had
no choice... *L* Yuck!!!

Wanted to introduce myself to Dr. Marchesini's family... My name is
Jamie Milner I am 39 and had the DS done November 9th and I am so
ever grateful I found Dr. M, I as others have said we feel blessed in
a weird way that my insurance denied me... I was treated with the
best of care.... would have never had the house calls in the
states..... I believe some of you already are familiar with Janie
Mott, well we had the surgery done on the same day... I am so glad
Janie and her husband were there.. thanks to so many of you who have
gone before us, she helped us out with some post op DS issues.. I
must slow my recovery was slow while in Brazil, but I listened to my
body and I have continued to heal.... I have really good days but I
always get fatigued.. but I was doing that pre op... at least I know
the fatigue will eventually turn into energy.... I have lost 30pds
thus far and I think I am in still in disbelief, but so grateful for
the loss... I hope to get to know each of you...

I disagree with the 20% assessment and since he doesn't do the DS himself I
can only presume he bases his info on anecdotal info from patients he sees
who have trouble....or from other physicians who are also poorly informed.
Yes...some people have diarrhea...I have more than usual but it usually
stops after I am up 5-6 hours and doesn't go 24 like it did in the
beginning. Others have lost too much and need pancreatic enzymes or other
effort to stabilize weight. I can think of a couple people who had
revisions for continued weight loss, someone who had a revision to try to
stop kidney stones and a couple others. But that is definitely not 20%. I
am sorry you are in the category of someone who may/may not need something
done. It is unfortunate and can happen. But I dispute the 20% number. I
do hope you plan on taking whatever reports/files you have with you to
Curitiba and consulting with Dr. M. He is operating on Arwen, has person
knowledge of Dr. B's work and can give you an unbiased and informed opinion
and information. Have it checked out but don't let the contact with a non
DS be your only source of info on how to proceed. W

my pcp called this afternoon. she wants me to go and
see a wls doc here in town to be evaluated for a
revision.
this doc doesn't do the ds--no one in town does--but
when they happened to discuss me, he says that he's
familiar with the procedure, and that fully 20% of ds
patients suffer from chronic diarrhea and severe
malabsorptive issues.
i hate to bolster his statistics, and i don't want to believe
this--especially on the eve of bringing my own daughter
to brazil for the same surgery.
yet there's no denying it--i am starving. i have no
vitiman d in my body. my hair is out in patches and
hasn't come bacy 15 months post-op, i have terrible
diarrhea and live on immodium and metamucil. i have
extremely low protein, albumen and potassium. my
blood sugar was a 67 average for the last quarter.
i try to eat all the time. i've lost another two pounds--
down to 125 now, and have alarming loss of muscle
mass. my joints are weak. i have trouble getting my hip
joints to lift me up stairs, and can't lift my head off the
pillow when i lie on my back. i'm freezing all the time.
i had my ds in spain, and have a common channel of 65
cm.
i don't want to gain back the weight, but i have agreed
to go and talk about it.
any advice or opinions? do you think the stats are
correct? fully 20%?

little WLS news (crosspost)

IN DEPTH: QUARTERLY HEALTH CARE REPORT
From the December 3, 2004 print edition
The Cost of Obesity
Long-term benefits of obesity surgery outweigh initial price tag, experts say
Scott D. Smith
Staff reporter
At 447 pounds, Ed Walsh's weight, diabetes and life was out of control.
The sheer mass of the 65-year-old retired 3M plant worker made him a prisoner in
his own home. He would "huff and puff" taking out the trash. He suffered through
a frightening episode of kidney failure. His blood-sugar level was more than
twice the acceptable levels -- at 300 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
But just a year after having bariatric surgery, which cost about $25,000,
Walsh's weight is down to 264 pounds, and he no longer takes insulin for his
diabetes.
"I'm getting my life back."
Minnesota's dramatic increase in bariatric surgeries is greatly adding to the
cost of health care in the state. But experts say those surgeries should save
money in the long run as patients such as Walsh avoid costly medical procedures
later in life.
That's why these surgeries have become a big business in Minnesota.
Obesity operations include gastric banding, gastric bypass -- so-called "stomach
stapling"-- duodenal switch and others. The procedures attempt to make stomachs
smaller and limit the amount of food a person can ingest or metabolize.
Between 2002 and 2003, the number of obesity surgeries in Minnesota jumped about
50 percent to 4,217. Minneapolis-based Allina Hospitals & Clinics performed
about 1,600 surgeries last year and is on pace to match that this year.
Eagan-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota saw a 128 percent increase
in claims for the procedures between 2001 and 2003. During that period, it paid
out $42.9 million. The surgeries cost between $14,000 and $40,000, said Dr.
Keith Folkert, medical director, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.
And that is just the start. Only a small number of Minnesotans who qualify for
the surgery actually get it. Nationally, it is estimated that about 8 to 10
million Americans are overweight by 100 pounds or more, but only about 140,000
surgeries were done this year.
Despite the high cost, all the major insurers in Minnesota cover obesity
surgery. However, it must be a last resort and patients must meet a number of
guidelines, such as being 100 pounds overweight.
"My belief is that in the long run it will actually be cost effective for
insurance companies," said Janet Rudlong, program manager for the Bariatric
Center at Mercy & Unity Hospitals, which performs more obesity operations than
any other program in the Twin Cities. She points to patients such as Ed Walsh.
"If someone is going to have diabetes for the next 20 years, that can easily run
over $700 a month."
A University of Minnesota researcher recently completed a study indicating that
bariatric surgery is a cost-effective way to treat obesity, because it pays for
itself as the loss of weight alleviates other diseases.
"Obesity surgery is cost effective in about 3.5 years," said Dr. Henry Buchwald,
director of the Fairview University Obesity Surgery Center and a surgery
professor at the university.
Buchwald was the lead author of the study appearing in the Oct. 13 issue of the
Journal of the American Medical Association that reviewed 136 existing studies
on bariatric surgery -- encompassing more than 22,000 obese patients.
The review analyzed the impact of obesity surgery on diabetes, cholesterol,
sleep apnea and hypertension.
The study found that when patients lose weight, 80 percent of those diseases are
reversed or cured, Buchwald said. Insurers who say the surgery isn't cost
effective are correct only if they can't keep a person in their insurance pool
for more than three years, he said.
"The public should know that this surgery is available and can help them."
Folkert, from Blue Cross, said it is generally accepted that the surgery will
help a patient avoid further problems down the line.
However, the potential monetary benefit of the surgery can be lost if
complications arise during the procedure.
"If there are serious, major complications, it could wipe out the profitability
of the surgeries," Rudlong said.
Complications occur in about 20 percent of the surgeries, according to some
studies, with about 1 percent of patients dying. However, obese people often
have complications with any major surgery they may receive.
Obese patients often have difficulty breathing after the surgery. If the person
is put on a respirator, the costs can easily top $100,000, Folkert said.
"The most expensive cases we've had have been over $300,000," he said.
To minimize expensive complications, Minnesota insurers are starting to send
patients to "centers of excellence" or surgeons that have the best track
records. For example, Bloomington-based HealthPartners only allows surgeons in
its network who have performed at least 100 procedures. Minnetonka-based Medica
also notified the program at Mercy that it will start only sending its bariatric
surgery patients to centers of excellence in 2005, Rudlong said.
Health insurers and employers are also doing more to promote exercise and good
nutrition in the hope of preventing morbid obesity in the first place.
"What has happened is that all of the health plans are looking into earlier
interventions," Folkert said.
During the past year, insurers such as HealthPartners, Medica and Blue Cross
have all started offering their members incentives to attend health clubs and
build exercise into their daily routines.
"This used to be considered a cosmetic surgery," Rudlong said. But now people
walk into her office and say, "I have to have this done or else I am going to
die."

Hi Shenise!
I propped myself up in bed and used a couple of pillows to surround
my belly, then turned ever so slightly on my side. It was my most
comfortable position to sleep in. During the day for naps, I lied
on the couch but again, used a pillow to prop up my belly (gave it
some stabilization). You'll find the most comfortable spot for you -
just keep trying different positions.
Yes, I had blood thinner shots in my belly. They left nasty bruises
for weeks, but didn't hurt much. Is yours bothering you?
It's perfectly okay to stay with liquid proteins until you're ready
to start introducing pureed foods. What I did about a week out was
to take chicken soup (with all its yummy goodness - chicken,
carrots, celery, noodles) and put them in my magic bullet. It
looked creamed but no cream was involved. It was good in protein
and it wasn't clear broth. Yummm!

Shenise. . I coulnt lay completely flat for a few days and slept on the couch .i
dont have a recliner. . but after a few days i slept in my bed w/ pillows
propped under my tummy to relieve the pressure. . the left side hurts for longer
than the rest of your tummy. . not sure exactly why .. but mine did anyway .. it
will get better the more you walk. .
Yes i did get shots in the hosp for blood thinners because they dont want you
developing clots . . but i didnt have any once i came home. .
I would think its ok for you to just tackle fluids for a few days. . thats what
my surgeon recommended and i was fine. . they even told me i didnt have to worry
about protein that first week because going into surgery we already have enough
nutrients in our body to help us. . so i just stuck w/ the clear liquids like
they said. . i was fine.
Hope that helped a little.

Someday the docs will think they've figured the whole thing out and as usual
they will be wrong. I was reading the NYTimes this morning. The first of the new
generation "diet Pills" is going into the second round of testing. In the first
round they picked a group of 3500 people (80% women) who weighed an average of
220 lbs. At the end of the year, the people taking the pill lost 19 lbs! Boy
I'll bet there were a whole lot of unhappy people in that group. On the other
hand, the control group lost an average of 5 lbs. Surgery is still the answer,
although the people in the test got substantially healthier. Then the test was
over and they gained all their weight back. I think if I'd developed that drug
it would be back to the drawing board.
Carole
Robin <jkrdrmom@...
I don't really know for sure (and I am a nurse!)
I do remember back in 1997 I had general anethesia for a surgery to
remove a big cyst and my right ovary. I know for a few weeks
afterward, I lost a several pounds becuase I just could not eat
much. I remember not really being interested in food and that
nothing tasted right. It was not as bad as I am have NOW, but I do
remember I just didn't want to eat much.
I think it was from the anesthesia. I know it sticks around in your
system for days and weeks afterward. Also I know that with removing
part of the stomach reduces alot of the acid and stuff the stomach
produces. Maybe that effects the desire to eat and the way food
tastes.
Maybe it is all just in our heads or maybe just a combination of all
these things! I really don't know for sure. I don't even know that
any of the docs know for sure.
It is a very interesting subject though.

Re: Shenise is back!!!

2008-08-24 09:44:12

Shenise,
Glad you're home and feeling a little better. I was in the hospital
for 4 nights and was so out of it from all the meds. The president
of the US could have come riding in on an elephant and I wouldn't
have known it. (not that I would have cared anyway--LOL).
They made me wear the O2 mask the entire time because I kept falling
asleep and my sat levels dropped whenever I was sleeping. And with
them having me on a pain med that obviously wasn't right for me, well
I couldn't do anything but sleep. I couldn't even walk around the
nurses station because my vision was so blurry. They didn't believe
me though. I kept telling them I couldn't see and they thought I was
just trying not to walk. I couldn't even push my own pain pump
button because I was so out of it. They had to come push it for me.
That was the worse experience.
My sister in law sent me yellow roses and thank God they were so
bright yellow, because I couldn't even tell what kind of flowers they
were, just that there was this big yellow ball sitting on the table
in my room.
BUT--glad you're home. If you still feel doped up, you should talk
to your Dr. about switching meds. Turns out I can't take morphine
very well. I get all flushed and actually start running a fever in
addition to being completely out of it.

feeling of losing food as a way to cope.
I am not really sure what to expect if I went. Anyone know?

Ibuprofen?????Have BAD back pain

2008-08-22 18:33:12

Hi, I woke up this morning with TERRIBLE back pain near my left
shoulder blade. I was a little sore yesterday, but today I can
barely move my head or ANYTHING without serious pain. Can I take
Ibuprofen? I don't know WHAT to do. I am wearing a small heating
pad on it right now. I know this is not a job for tylenol. Even
ibuprofen will probably not help much. UGH! I don't know what I did
to my back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Side Effects

2008-08-22 12:42:08

Immune system: it is suppressed after surgery. The worst times are between 3-6
weeks but can go on for a while. If you have not had an issue yet, I would not
worry about it. I have had 2 bouts with Bronchitis since the surgery and that
is why. I feel great now (though my head is getting a bit drafty with the hair
loss) I did go ahead and have the flu shot this year for the first time....I
figure that this is the year I will get it if I am going to. I have never had
the flu, and I would liek to keep it that way. I do not endorse immunizations
in general, but if there is an honest call for it, then I suggest that you speak
to your dr. about it. Mine felt that my immune system is still down enough and
because I work in a hospital setting on top of that, that I should have the flu
shot.
You should know that I had the shot on Monday, and my arm is still sore. I
dont know if that is typical or if I am a baby.

Question about those CHEWABLE VITAMINS!!

2008-08-21 21:57:51

Hi Robin,
They are just regular-sized capsules. I haven't had any trouble getting them
down. I do have trouble getting my prescription potassium pill to go down,
but it is huge. The capsules just seem to slide right down without a huge
gulp of water. They really increased the iron in this new formula and I've
only been on it for a few days, but I really feel like my energy level is
much better already.

RE: [DrMarchesini-DS] After care?

2008-08-20 23:07:33

I agree with much of what George says. The only addition I would make is
set things up before you leave. Find a gastro if you don't have one. Talk
to your PCP. Tell them you plan on bringing back with you a copy of your
operative report and your x-rays from your post op leak test. Ask if they
require anything else and if your PCP is willing to fax your lab work
reports to Dr. M for his review. See if you can get the follow thru you
want set up in advance and make you're your PCP is willing to do this. The
first week I was home I went to the gastro, showed him the X-ray and had him
put the report in my chart. I told him I expected no problems but I wanted
him to know what my insides looked like in case I ended up in an ER or
something. In the second month I called him for a prescription for diarrhea
but otherwise I have had very little contact with him. My PCP does fax lab
results. Other than that....as George says .most things are needed anyway.
If you had co morbidities they should be followed up anyway. Have your
doctor use the code for apnea or arthritis or malnutrition or whatever on
what he/she submits to insurance. They probably will never know this is WLS
follow up. If you have a major obstruction or something initially that puts
you back in the hospital I think most people, again, have little problem
because the are working on a diagnostic current problem and code it
appropriately. I know I have had better follow up the 16 months I've been
post op from Dr. M and my local treating doctors than I ever had with any
U.S. surgeries I ever had. I have Medicare as primary and BC/BS as
secondary and I have never had anything denied or questioned. W

Shenise is back!!!

I had no one to post for me so here is the update. I became an
official loser on Monday, Ocotber 29th. My sister said that I did
not get out of surgery until 2:00pm. I was wheeled in at 7. I had
a couple of issues...1) They missed on my epidural...twice so I
wound up without the epidural and with back spasms for two days. I
was in SICU until Thursday. They finally stopped my back spasms
with Toridal ( Before that I was using my morphine pump. At first,
my back hurt more than my incision. On a bright note..I do have
liquid stiches so it looks like I will have a cute scar. :) I found
out I had 2 bad episodes of APNEA while in the hospital so no
sleeping flat. Let's see what else...ok the dietician was cool with
clear liquid...with soft liquid on Thursday night...well I really
should have known better...They brought me cream of potato
soup...and I ate it...bad move....I was sooooooooooo sick
yesterday....I was nasueated...I used like 20mg of morphine from the
pump yesterday and my pouch hurt so bad....after 2pm it passed and I
was cool. so now it is sip sip sip and walk walk walk. I had my
first throw up episode today but it wasn't so bad. Just had my
liquid pain meds and going to bed. Even with some of the episodes I
have had...I am so glad I had the RNY.

Re: After care?

2008-08-18 13:20:55

Hi Newbie!
Welcome to switchville!
I had to self pay myself. I am 5 weeks post op, so I have not had
any need to see my PCP yet. My PCP did agree to do any follow up
care I would need after my surgery. I am not sure what my insurance
company will cover or not. I suppose it won't cover any tests that
are not "normal" or usual for exams unless I am having an illness
that would require the test.
I guess it all depends on your insurance company and the situation.
I hope everything goes smoothly for you during your WLS journey. You
won't be sorry you picked Dr M. Being self pay is the PITS, but it
is also a blessing. If my insurance company had paid for my DS, than
I might never have found Dr M. I am very happy that he was able to
do my surgery. So far, my recovery has been fine. I think I am
having the "usual" tummy issues a lot of people have. I am cranky
sometimes because of these problems and I have complained alot, but I
really AM happy I had the surgery.
Welcome!

Dariece,
Welcome. Making the decision to have WLS is very hard when you have
all the facts. After you actually have the surgery, you can be
miserable for a few weeks. The one thing I would suggest is that you
spend a lot of time researching this surgery, not only the pre-
surgery info and requirements, or the day of surgery information, but
also what to expect after the surgery. If you have been reading
lately, a great many of us are in the 2 wk to 6 month after surgery
area. We have some on their way through the steps, and we can give
you plenty of advice in that area. But the best support and reality
advailable to you is right here.
Welcome and ask any questions you want, nothing is taboo, and none of
us will candy coat it. We will be here for you when you need us
though.
Although I had it a little rough after surgery, I am ready to move
past that and enjoy the life that is left for me.

Taste Changes (Was: I miss eating!!!Warning....Whining inside!)

2008-08-17 10:34:13

My tastes never changed although lots of people reported it. I just found
nothing tasted of interest or the way I remembered it in the beginning.
After a few months I found that I enjoyed eating again. I don't obsess over
pizza and cookies the way I did but I enjoy them when I eat them. I think
for me a lot of it is mind change. I can't think of anything I dislike now
that I loved before although many many people say that their tastes have
changed. I also am lucky in that white flour things have never bothered
me. Milk did for nearly a year and I still rarely use it since I developed
the taste for Soy milk and it doesn't spoil in the fridge. W

Lora,
I tried the Fuze and of all the artificial sweetened drinks, they
weren't real bad. I tried one flavor and used it to take my morning
vitamins for a week or so, then I had another flavor, something
watermelon, but that was sipped and then never touched agin. Thanks
for the suggestion, but the artificial sweetener thing is just so
odd. I used it before the surgery without problems. I forgot to
look for one of the "on the go" products with the stevia that was
suggested. Actually, I forgot all about it until your email. I
still have to look for that.

it does not happen to everyone.
some say everything tastes the same as it always has to them.

You may be able to find coupons online for it, but it is pricey. TOTALLY worth
it though. It is possible that you can ask your PCP or surgeon to write a
perscription for it so that it only costs as much as your co-pay or if you have
a pretax type medical thing that will take care of it. Just a thought.

a long time and finally have to get over my shyness to ask some
questions. I have decided to have my DS with DR. M. My self-insured
Aetna HMO policy won't cover any WLS. My question is, if there should
be any complications after I get home can I expect my HMO to cover
treatment? Has anyone else had this experience? What about follow up
costs? If my insurance won't cover any of it can you give me any idea
of what I shoulod budget for the first year after DS?

Re: Medical Alert Bracelet

The only place I found any cheap ones was at the Walmart pharmacy
counter... just plain silver bracelets and necklaces that you mail
in to get engraved. I ended up getting one online. It wasn't
cheap, but I figured it I am going to wear it every day, I might as
well like it. My surgeon's office suggested using "RNY - No NG
Tube", so that's what I had put on it. It's probably a good thing
thsi surgery "encouraged" me to get one because I also take blood
thinners and have not worn amedical ID for that in several years

Teeth

2008-08-10 15:51:18

Cheryl,
I think my teeth and mouth will never be the same. I even blame the
yucky flavors of food on my mouth. I brush my teeth and within
minutes, it seems, they are coated again. Be careful though, since you
are just a few days out from sugery....Thrush is a byproduct of
antibiotic use. If you tongue is thikly coated with white stuff, call
your dentist or surgeon for some nystantin. It cleared mine up in a
few days. And, yes, such awful tastes I have had in my mouth.
So you have an appetite but food is not yummy like it used to be. You
sound like me. They tell me in about 4 months that will change. I
will let you know when I get there. Today I bought a wide variety of
protein foods. I have eaten them before and have not liked the
flavor. Now that I am 11 weeks out, I will try again because I know my
tastebuds have changed. Good Luck.

Congrats Deborah on being down 105 pounds! : )))))
The scale has finally inched down a bit for me and I am down 32 in 5 weeks. Not
too shabby. I am praying for 45 by Christmas.
I second the emotion on the recipes. I have an incredible White Chicken Chili
recipe that sits really well with me at 5 weeks out- I'll try and post it later
today- it's got lots of white navy beans and sour cream and cheese and chicken
in it so it's gotta be pretty good in the protein department and it is SOOOOOOOO
yummy. I think I know what we're having for dinner tonight! ; ) Thanks! ; )

You are so right. I am going to make it my duty to help people see the

Sorry long, but my thoughts usually are (+_+)

2008-08-09 22:20:51

Well, I have been away from my computer and playing for the past three days.
My DH and I have been at the Disney complex and doing our Christmas there.
It was so interesting that I still had energy at the end of the day and he was
exhausted. Last year we just couldn't do Disney very well because I was in a
scooter. This year I ran and skipped and dragged poor hubby all over the
place. DID I SAY THAT I AM DOWN 105 POUNDS : - ))))))
Reading the boards this morning has been so enjoyable. I love hearing from
everybody.
I had a horrible problem getting some of my pills down. I take Glucosimine
and Chondritin for my arthritis. They are the biggest pills I think that I
have ever run up against. They are HUGE. I tried breaking them and I agree, it
was like trying to swallow jagged rocks. It made my throat hurt. Of course,
my DH came up with the brilliant idea. He had bought me a coffee bean grinder
at Walmart a couple years ago. Well, he ground them up and I added a
spoonful to a small bit of applesauce and down the hatch they went. Very easy,
and
tasty. DID I SAY THAT I AM DOWN 105 POUNDS : - ))))))
At first I would do just one dosage of pills so that I could measure how much
was needed in each spoonful. Later I would just grind up days worth and put
in a little package and use it throughout the day. Later I switched to adding
it to pineapple, cherries and fruit cocktail, apple pie filling and anything
yummy. Now that I am out about a year, I can swallow those broken up pills
with no problem. But for some reason my throat would hurt for about 6 months.
DID I SAY THAT I AM DOWN 105 POUNDS : - ))))))
Now, like I said I am out almost a year, I can and do eat steak and all the
foods that I like. Except chicken. Dry breast, yucky chicken. But I think
that is mostly a head thing. (We all have been on, before surgery, the chicken
breast diet because that was what was lowest in calories.) I mean I CAN eat
the chicken if I have to, if, I put enough other stuff on it. It just gags me
if I know that I am eating chicken breast.
Another truly strange thing is that lately I have been craving canned green
peas. Not the good kind (little lesuire baby peas) but the old cheap in the
can ones. I can just open that can and add a little salt and eat them things.
I can feel most of you out there shivering in horror, but that is what I
crave. Never liked them before surgery but here I am. DID I SAY THAT I AM DOWN
105 POUNDS : - ))))))
My sister and I use to do the search and destroy missions at the grocery
store. WE would cruise the isles looking for anything and I mean anything that
would taste really good or interesting. Sometimes we could do this for hours.
Only problem was by the time we would get to the checkout we had put most of
it back because after driving it around in the buggy it would start to look
gross or unappealing in our minds. (Yeah, yeah, we have weird minds) So out the
door we would go with only one or two little items that we would, or would,
not end up eating. Now I can make up my mind immediately and grab and go. DID
I SAY THAT I AM DOWN 105 POUNDS : - ))))))
Your taste are going to change, that is part of the surgery and not all the
things that you liked before are going to be wonderful after. But you replace
it with new and adventurous things. I never could eat spicy. But since Dr. M
wrapped my esophagus I love spicy. I have just sent DH to store for
ingredients for Taco Soup. Yum Yum. Can't wait to try that one. And YES YES
YES, ,
someone needs to start a list or group for the DS recipes that WE LIKE. I
think that would help. Only stipulation that I would put on it is that
intelligent person should monitor it and try to give us a guesstimate on the
protein
amount. It sure would have helped me in the beginning. But as everybody's
taste change, you might never know which recipe would help. DID I SAY THAT I
AM
DOWN 105 POUNDS : - ))))))

2008-08-09 10:54:18

You just posted everything and I just sent you an answer. I presume this
was sent earlier but arrived later. Dr. M is $3500 and Durval $3800. I
just sent you a long answer to your other listed prices. W

RE: [DrMarchesini-DS] is this price list current? >>>Diane

2008-08-09 03:33:14

The $300 isn't for just the bloodwork. The $300 (or maybe $400 now not
sure) is for ALL tests. Endsocopy alone costs $100. I don't know what just
the bloodwork costs. I can't speak to many of the others. I spent 14 days
in the hospital and needed no bandaging supplies since by the time I got out
I was wearing a napkin under the binder. And the hotel is usually around
$35-$40 a night depending upon the Real. You are paying less since you made
your own reservation so you know what the hotel will cost. But you may have
to pay for your breakfast. Never used a cab, Durval did my laundry and I
would pay the very few Reals he required in return just like when he bought
me post cards or juices or yogurts. I never got out to a store or to do
things. I tipped Leandro in dollars. I learned it from someone else but it
seems few people do it any more. When I was there I was told they all loved
dollars so I got 100 one dollar bills and spread them liberally in the
airport, the hotel, etc. It was easier for me since I never went to any
place that needed Reals and the few things Durval paid for I would have to
give him a $20 to convert before I could pay him. I often did $2-3 at a
time to Leandro and I used him all the time the 3 days I was in the hotel
since I was alone and immobile. He probably got $12 to $15 a day from me
but it was well deserved. Airport was usually $1 except for the ones who
did major wheel chair pushing and steering me through Customs. I gave them
$5 cause they worked for it. The only other thing is I had an AT&T calling
card which gave me 640 American minutes and about 250 minutes I think it was
from Brazil to America. Paid $40. things may be different now but I was
allowed one phone call per day from the hospital for free and Durval would
dial it for me. I alternated one day my daughter, another day my other
daughter or brother and even a couple times my shrink. I simply rotated
them. I think there are now cheaper methods but at the time that was the
best my research found. My daughter used a different one. My name has
drawn a complete blank. Oh...think it is MCI. Suddenly my brain decided it
is bedtime. Your numbers do sound right for the other things but I can't
speak from personal experience. W

help--lost my price list!

2008-08-08 22:27:12

just a quickie--i lost my price quote from dr. m.
can someone tell me again how much i'll be paying for
arwen's ds? i know the hospital is $4500, and i have the
tickets and hotel covered already.
what else will i be paying? what's the breakdown on the
procedure, binder, meds, nursing, etc?
thanks a lot!

is this price list current?

2008-08-08 14:54:20

i just found these prices. can anyone tell me--are they
current?
and arwen is getting all her pre-op tests in brazil. does
anyone have a total for all the tests, including the
endoscopy?
thanks so much!
diane
-$3,500 USD to Dr. M
-$300 USD to Durval
-$4,500 USD to the Hospital
-$300 USD for the pre-op bloodwork I had done in
Curitiba
-$40 USD for the binder
-About R150 ($50 USD) for gauze & tape, pre-op
prescription cold meds, and post-op meds
-R1600 ($600 USD) for 12 nights at the Parthenon with
breakfast, local phone calls, and high-speed internet
access (the hotel alone was R130/night, or about $45
USD, a steal in my opinion)
-About $40 USD for calling cards that I used to call
home and check in with family
-About R300 ($100) for cab fares to various places
around the city (I went a lot of places, however. Highest
one-way cab fare was R12.)
-R24 ($9) for both my friend and I to do our laundry at a
Brazilian laundromat. This involved lugging our laundry
to the laundromat and doing it ourselves. You can have
the hotel do it for you, but it costs about ten times as
much.
-About R300 ($100) for group trips to the flea market, a
day-long car trip that took the place of the train trip, and
a city tour
-About R300 ($100) in various tips to the bellhops,
maid, drivers, etc.

Question about those CHEWABLE VITAMINS!!

2008-08-07 18:15:39

Hi Lisa,
I'm getting in on this discussion late - haven't had much time for the
message board lately. I just reordered my multi-vitamins and calcium from
Vita4Life and they are now making two separate formulas - one specifically
for DS patients. YAY! They changed the formula awhile ago and made it better
for RNY, but I felt like I wasn't getting everything I needed anymore so was
looking around for something else. I decided to get one more order from
Vita4Life while I was searching for a replacement, and I was excited to find
they had made a formula just for us. You are supposed to take 12
capsules/day (4 caps 3x per day). Here is what it has in it (per 12
capsules):
Vitamins:
Vit A (as palmitate) 45,000 IU 900% of daily
value
Vit B-6 (from pyridoxine HCI) 6 mg 300% of
daily value
Vit B-2 (as riboflavin) 5.2 mg 306% of daily
value
Vit B-1 (as thiamine mononitrate) 4.5 mg 300% of daily
value
Vit B-12 (as cyanocobalamin) 18 mcg 300% of daily
value
Vit C (as ascorbic acid) 280 mg 467% of daily
value
Vit D (as cholecalciferol) 2,400 IU 600% of
daily value
Vit E (as dl-alphatocopheryl acetate) 60 IU 200% of daily
value
Vit E (as d-alphatocopheryl succinate) 400 IU 1500% of daily value
Vit K (as phytonadione) 100 mcg 125% of daily
value
Vit A (as beta carotene) 5000 IU 100% of daily
value
Biotin 300 mcg 100% of daily
value
Pantothenic Acid (from d-calcium pantothenat) 20 mg 200% of daily
value
Folic Acid 800 mcg 200% of
daily value
Niacinamide 400 mg 200% of
daily value
Minerals:
Calcium (from calcium citrate) 2000 mg 200% of daily value
Chromium (from chromium chloride) 50 mcg 42% of daily
value
Copper (from copper oxide) 4 mg 200% of
daily value
Iron (from iron fumerate) 260 mg 1445% of daily
value
Magnesium (from magnesium oxide) 200 mg 50% of daily
value
Manganese (from manganese sulfate) 10 mg 500% of
daily value
Molybdenum (from sodium molybdate) 50 mcg 67% of daily
value
Potassium (from potassium chloride) 60 mg 60% of
daily value
Selenium (from sodium selenate) 50 mcg 71% of daily value
Zinc (from amino acid chelate) 100 mg 667% of daily value
I've also been taking their calcium supplement, but am wondering if I can
reduce the dosage I've been taking. I'm having labs done next week, so I'll
wait until I see where I'm at before I change anything. The calcium
supplement has 1125 mg of calcium (citrate), 400 IU D-3 (as cholecalciferol)
and 3 mg Boron (from boron citrate) in 6 capsules. I'm taking 12 capsules a
day. I haven't had any trouble with getting either of these capsules down
and really couldn't force myself to do enough of the chewables or stand the
taste of the liquid, so this is working for me. I also added Twin Labs
Allergy-D (it is water soluble) to help with the absorption of the calcium.
I take one capsule (they are really tiny) with every calcium dose (3 per
day). I'm anxious to see how my labs are this time because my calcium was
very low last time and I was taking quite a bit, but just not absorbing it
very well. Hope this helps. Oh, the website for the vitamins is
www.Vita4Life.net.

I miss eating!!!Warning....Whining inside! >>Lisa

2008-08-07 14:11:13

OK Lisa....do you need a Mommy too? <g
probably older than you. I'll adopt you if need be. The trick is not to do
what we did pre op. Then we spent half our life saying "I won't eat." And
then being so hungry or depressed or angry or whatever we grabbed whatever
was at hand. The trick is to say in advance, "It is 1pm and I just ate.
Where will I be between 3-4pm and what will I do when I get hungry then?"
After a while it becomes second nature and you find you continue to eat that
often or you revert back to regular eating at meal times or whatever. But
in the beginning YOU MUST EAT and plan for it so you are prepared. Then if
you get nauseous or gassy you know it isn't from an empty stomach and deal
with that. You may not even enjoy the eating but you still eat. End of
second lecture...and the final one. W

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] 3 really happy things

2008-08-07 09:51:07

Tell me Lora... how does it feel to have people read YOUR post, and feel a
little jealous?? LOL... you can bet some do! :))
It's sounds like the conference went very well. Your presentation sounds
interesting, I wouldn't mind hearing it myself. We already established that you
chose the right thing to wear, and you managed to work around the food thing,
and you LOST OVER 50 LBS!!!!! (well, not at the conference.. but you still lost
it). It is so wonderful to read so much happiness from you... but we all knew
it would happen ;)
Pat
Lora <cicerogirl@...
Really happy part #1: The conference went very well, although I
skipped the Thursday night reception/social time and opted to go to
the hotel, eat some tuna, and go to bed before 9pm! I was just as
tired yesterday when I got home. My presentation ("What Sexual
Trauma Clients Won't Tell Their Therapists") was VERY well received,
I was able to have a nice (although short) conversation with a
previous professor with whom things had been strained for the past
year (very long story short: he was clearly having an affair with
one of his colleagues and when I tried to tell him that people were
noticing and this could be a problem, he tried to deny it and got
pissed off when I insisted that I was not stupid and neither were
the other people noticing what was going on) -- We started out with
a really good relationship and I was very sad that things were so
strained, so it was a big relief to be able to have a friendly chat
without any tension, I was able to talk with a colleague about the
emotional aspects of WLS (and about the possibility of me doing some
special training in order to work with potential, pre-op, and post-
op WLS people), and...
Really happy part #2: I have FINALLY lost 50 pounds!
It was hard to be in a place with a gazillion wonderful restaurants
and having trouble finding something I could eat (we went to The
Cheesecake Factory because it has like a 15-page menu, and since I
cannot tolerate beef (other than filet mignon) and cannot have raw
veggies yet, the only thing I could find to eat where I wouldn't
waste 80% of the meal was a chicken and dried tomato pizza so I
could just eat some of the toppings -- boy was the waiter
confised!), but I had taken some "rations" -- small bananas, a pouch
of tuna, a protein bar, a packet of SF hot cholocate and some
protein powder (and I bought some 1% milk) -- so I managed by eating
dinner Thurs and breakfast Fri in my hotel room.
On Tuesday I will officially get the OK to start doing more exercise
than just the walking and upper body stuff that I have been doing.
I'm ready to at least be able to use my glider. Hopefully that will
speed the weight loss up a bit.
I only had one person at the conference specifically mention my
weight loss, but she was one of only 2 people who knew I was having
the surgery. I had a couple of other people compliment my blouse,
though. But...
Really happy part #3: When I got to the hotel, I changed into my
nightgown and went into the bathroom to put my hair up, wash my
face, etc., and I kind of startled myself when I looked in the
mirror -- there was something about the bathroom lighting that made
me do a double take because at first it did not look like me in the
mirror -- I was expecting to see the round fat face I have been
looking at for years in hotel mirrors but it wasn't there, and there
was even a hint (just a hint, though!) of shoulder and collar bones
instead of just a general body shape covered by all that fat!
Somehow seeing myself in that lighting, in a different mirror than
the ones I use at home, was startling. THEN... the next day, when
sitting in a session led by the former professor mentioned above, I
suddenly realized that by the time I see most of these people again
NEXT November, I will be thin and they will probably be shocked!
It's still a little surreal to me, I guess, that because of this
surgery (and my part in the protein/water/vitamin triad, of course)
the weight IS coming off and will CONTINUE to come off (instead of
me not being able to continue with the diet du jour and giving up
and then just gaining it all back). By the time I see some of these
people again, I will be a normal weight person! {tears}
Lora

Wendy...that was a very informative little lecture! I needed to hear
those words, too! Our tummies don't want to get SO hungry and then
fill to capacity! Makes perfectly good sense! And also the part
about eating more to lose weight. So our bodies don't think we're
starving ourselvs. Very good point!

Good luck if you haven't left for the airport yet. I also gave my younger

I gave Dr. M written instructions about who decides whether to pull the
plug, etc. Thankfully nothing was needed. But things like that do make our
mortality all the more real. Glad you are about to get off one roller
coaster and onto the next. Give my love to everyone. W

[WLS Friendship & Support] am I alone here?

2008-08-06 14:15:50

Perhaps you could try some fat free refried beans with a little bit
of RF cheese. Refried beans were my best friend for a couple of
weeks... not much chewing required (!), easy on the pouch, easy to
fix, keeps well in the fridge, and has tons of protein, esp. if you
add a bit of cheese. I even added a touch of hot sauce and my pouch
didn't mind a bit.
IF you are able to tolerate milk (some people can't after surgery),
you can get both protein AND liquid in by drinking 1% or skim milk.
You really DO need to get the protein in to keep your health up
(your body will take the protein it needs from your organs
otherwise) and to keep the weight loss going. It's hard at first,
but it gets easier.
Lora

Re: Question.......

2008-08-06 01:30:04

Hi Lisa!
Maybe you need to shake things up a bit - walk a little more, or
maybe do a different type of exercise. Have a protein shake for
your snack instead of yogurt. Are you drinking all of your fluids?
Plateau's do hit. You just need to keep going and not get
discouraged. The weight will come off in its own good time.

Re: New poll for WeightLossSurgeryFS

2008-08-05 22:58:07

Yay! I used the 51-69 category because I have lost 50.5 pounds and
I want credit for the half pound!!
Just a caveat about this poll though -- these are raw numbers and do
not reflect length of time post-op or how much weight people had to
lose to being with. My concern is, that with the tendency for som
many of us (myself included) to compare ourselves to others no
matter how hard we try not to, the raw numbers might be
discouraging. I know it would have been for me last week (but I'm
on such a "high" form that 50.5 pounds that at the moment I don't
care how much anyone else has lost -- somehow there's a
psychological "magic" to 50!)

Stupid - reality check

2008-08-05 20:30:15

Hi San,
Sometimes we all need a reality check. And going back to a liquid
diet for a little while is really not a bad idea. It will settle
your stomach and kick start your weight loss again.
That's not a bad idea - for any of us hitting a plateau. Maybe I'll
jump on the liquid protein train too - just to kick this little
plateau in the hiney! I'm with you!
Hey, and San? We're with you and support you. We under no
obligation to do so, but we're all friends here - and that's what we
do because we WANT to.
Be true to yourself and love yourself for who you are. We are all
in this together. Lean on us and we'll give you what you need to
get through the hard times.
